Sounding appalled by it all, an officemate asked me that question one day. I instantly understood (I'm sure it's a question being asked by the multitude/silent majority leery of the gay life) where he's coming from, but I was challenged by the question so much that I hazarded some answers.
1. Because these are stories that had been kept for so long and have been waiting to be told.
2. Because these must be the untold stories of so many writers populating the local indie film industry.
3. Because so many other stories, though strictly not about gays/homosexuals (i.e., Jay, Masahista), are very much related to gayness. I remember a novelist who once told her writing workshop students in the '90s: "If you want to make a name in the future, you'll want to write about the stories of male prostitutes." Writing about call boys, a formerly unexplored territory, naturally leads to writing about their clients.
4. Because the gay life has become mainstream. For better or worse, the gay affirmative lifestyle has been largely accepted (or at least fearfully allowed due to some influential lobbying by the gay rights movement) by society, thus their strong presence (and dare I say celebration) on TV, the burgeoning gay bar industry, and even almost a representation in Congress, etc.
After the topic will have been exhausted, I have this feeling, writers will move to the next uncharted territory. I wonder what that might be.
See you in court
